Avoiding the Plain Vanilla Portfolio

Avoiding the Plain Vanilla Portfolio.

How many times in your life have you chosen to go to an ice cream shop that ONLY sells vanilla ice cream? No toppings, no other flavors, just straight up vanilla? My guess is probably never. However, when it comes to investing that’s what most people do without even knowing it!

You see most investment management firms that you have dealt with have a simple vanilla process. They take your information, plug it into a computer and like magic they get a classic vanilla looking portfolio. A mix of different mutual funds with perhaps some extra cash just in case. They take your age subtract it by 100 and you end up with the allocation for stocks and bonds. It’s what the academics have been teaching for decades so it’s what the masses are doing. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s better than nothing  . . . but it’s not best.

Recently I was invited to the wonderful state of Colorado to give a presentation to a group of investors. The presentation that I was able to give discussed how we, Iron Gate Global Advisors (IGGA), build and manage portfolios. The portfolios are anything but “plain vanilla” as they incorporate both stocks, options, ETFs (exchange traded funds) and when the time is right fixed income.

It was a great discussion with this group of investors as we discussed not only how IGGA manages money but also what I have learned in my 10+ years of being in the financial markets. In fact the response was so great that I decided to record the educational session when I rolled back into Salt Lake City so those that didn’t attend could watch it.

Below you will find that presentation in three different segments. They are as follows:

Part I: Stocks
Part II: Sector Rotation
Part III: Options

I hope you enjoy the educational content. If you have any questions about any of the material presented or if you would like me to speak to your group of investors whether online or live, please contact me (Brett Pattison) at brett@igga.dev.

We love what we do as investment advisors and are always willing to help you in any way that we can.

Building a Portfolio Part I: Stocks

In this session we discuss how Iron Gate Global Advisors implements stock investing in their portoflios. This includes the criteria for our stock selection and the importance of conviction when buying stocks. For anyone that invests in stocks, this is a must listen too.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S9lVBKYHDo&feature=youtu.be” el_class=”videoborder”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Portfolio Manager Brian Hunsaker taught a session for investors that takes a much deeper dive into the stock criteria mentioned in the above video. Building a Portfolio Part II: Sector and Global Rotation

In this session we discuss the importance of probabilities when investing. Part of these probabilities include gaining an understanding of the cyclical nature of the stock market. We discuss the role of fundamentals, technical and demonstrate how one may take advantage of these probabilities.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpNg0JPiPxg&feature=youtu.be” el_class=”videoborder”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]For a deeper dive into the world of sector rotation, click here. Portfolio Manager Brett Pattison teaches expands upon the material discussed in the video above.

Building a Portfolio Part III: Options and Cash

Options are some of the most misunderstood instruments in the financial markets today. When understood properly they can be a great instrument for reducing risk and finding income. In this session we not only discuss options but demonstrate some potential criteria for consideration. We will also discuss the role of cash in a portfolio and why the percentage of cash changes based on market conditions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epX3HEEg-zA&feature=youtu.be” el_class=”videoborder”][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The following presentation is for educational purposes only and is not a recommendation or endorsement of any particular investment or investment strategy. Past performance does not indicate or guarantee future success. Returns will vary and all investments involve risks, including loss of principal. Options are not suitable for all investors. Option trading involves high risks and you can experience a significant loss of funds invested.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][vc_separator color=”grey” el_width=”80″][ult_buttons btn_title=”Click here to learn more about how Iron Gate Global can help you. ” btn_align=”ubtn-center” btn_size=”ubtn-custom” btn_width=”650″ btn_height=”45″ btn_padding_left=”25″ btn_padding_top=”15″ btn_title_color=”#ffffff” btn_bg_color=”#295e77″ btn_hover=”ubtn-no-hover-bg” btn_anim_effect=”none” btn_bg_color_hover=”#3f7791″ icon=”Defaults-thumbs-up” icon_size=”32″ btn_icon_pos=”ubtn-sep-icon-bottom-push” btn_border_style=”solid” btn_color_border=”#ffffff” btn_border_size=”1″ btn_radius=”3″ btn_shadow_size=”5″ tooltip_pos=”left” btn_font_size=”18″ btn_link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Figga.com%2Fcontact-an-advisor%2F||”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
